There's a long story about my box F4A51 ( full code F4A5AK1A1Z) but basically was replaced under wty, in fact 3 boxes put in (all remanufactured exchange boxes by Fluid Drive) for mitsubishi and all 3 had issues.

Anyway, never been right and you reach a point sometimes of just walking away.

planetary set failure, along with other issues like seized manual valve in the Valve body which was worn out in my opinion.

have good look at the pics and take note of the pins that have dropped. you can see 3 of 4 failed. one clearly dropped long ago going by the way it's be ground down so you can no longer make out the slot. there is one that is normal to compare to.

What i'm interested in is the code stamped "4' Was looking at used sets but have differing codes like "3", "L" etc. been told related to ratios but I'm not sure if it applies to the whole set or the part it's stamped on or one particular part within that differs.

Going by the parts listed most of the parts appear to be the same in most V6 cars these are fitted to but the O/D set looks like that may be where these differ.

I'm struggling to get across what i mean but was thinking of getting a complete used assmbly in hope that maybe just the O/d gearset could be swapped.

very little of my planetary set is salvageable.

hey there good to see you posting TW2005

not sure about the " 4 "

you can use a replacement or used set of gears /bearings /what one ever needs to fix the box

check all bearing and working shafts

if metal has been flowing through the clutch material will be embedded with fine metals

sure, but what i need to work out is the differences because there are some very good used cheap sets in the states but they have no vehicle data just the code stamped so kinda stuck without more of an idea.

very hard to find this info, not even mentioned in the manuals or rebuild sheets from other sources.

The steels are looking very good except the reverse which I'll get a shot of sometime. metal has been flowing for quite a while , the fluid is like panning for gold with flecks and dust like brass from the shims that fell out of the planetary

Ok, next part in this saga.

used box, told 124 000k, no way of knowing. Did a preventative check of the wave spring. shattered in 6. looks like it's all ther or at most mayb 10-25mm missing. If so it may have been removed during a drain.

what i need though is an experienced opinion of the damage to the end of the L-R brake piston. can i get away with it. read plentyo f stories with people driving for a long time with a broken spring and I doubt the damage to mine is unique so expecting most boxes end up with some damage in this area..

This is a collection of images, need some help and I'm at the stage I may just have to gamble as is.

lucky i guess I can use the one piece from my dead box. There are a cople of small chips on the face of the pressure late. can't really salvage my other one either, much of a muchness as the metal from the planetary failure also has marked the same parts. Not sure how to get this piston out either.

was considering cleaning the surface up a little as there are a couple of bits that may flake off in time.

Have you dealt with LANCERCITY by any chance on Ebay since you're pretty close to caloundra?

You sure it's stuffed? that's a relief at least i got that part right, LOL

correct that's their ebay name, no idea if it's a legit yard or not but no paperwork or receipt which shows the donor vehicle details which I thought was law now. I got a wheel rim when I was in brisbane last and got a docket which had every bit of info like vin and mileage etc for proof in case it was from a stolen vehicle, rebirthing etc.

Have created a headache though. pulled the circlip off the low/reverse piston to get it out not realising the pressure and a special tool needed to compress this back. trip to a local tranny dude who's offered to help. There is hope.

the end to this saga went well. In the end I've given up all ideas of trying to rebuild the failed boxed now realising by the time i got parts even if I got a suitable used planetary set it simply not a good idea. best thing for this box is to lay it to rest. Will most likely donate it to the guy that helped me and maybe what's still ok in the box may help someone else.

considering i got a complete used working box for $400 that in itself would be a cheaper start point to rebuild from.
Anyway, after getting past my diassembly error and recycling the updated wave spring into the replacement box, getting it back together, new Tc seals, pump gasket and filter, axle seals, sealing the box up, i used Toyota 1281 sealant which is the same 1281 spec mits quotes and a three bond product, no leaks.

have to say that sealant is top stuff curing in 15mins.

Box went back in and apart from some adaptive teething issues which initially I had 3-4 flare and 2-3 flare bad at high speed upshifts this all dialled out with a lot of driving and relearning changing the shift point with the throttle.

Final result, a box that is so perfect it's hard to believe given the black fluid and unknown history. better than any of the 3 reman units and better than the original
