Hi all,

The cigarette outlet on my Lancer is noted as 120W max on the cover and in the manual, but checking the fuse for the lighter/accessory socket in the manual and in the car (fuse 13) it's a 15A fuse which I thought should allow 180W?

I bought an air compressor which I wanted to plug in which states a max current of 14A (168W).

Would it be safe to use?

Thanks

In theory, yes, but fuses are made up of bits of wire and can be quite variable - some are fast blow, others are continuously rated

A 120W circuit has a 15A fuse to give 20% safety margin before it blows and you'd be eating into this margin.

A 15A fuse would need to manufactured to a tolerance of better than 7%. According to this paper https://www.eaton.com/content/dam/e...ing-for-current-limiting-fuses-td132005en.pdf manufacturers generally aim for +/- 10% tolerance.

If your fuse is -10% then it will blow, if it's +10% then it probably won't
