Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6 2002, but this post should apply to many cars

Symptoms: Having just started and driven away, between 20mph and about 40mph, there is a persistent knocking, once per wheel revolution. This gets much louder when breaking, and you can feel the knocking through the brake pedal. After typically 40 seconds of driving steadily at 30mph without breaking, the ABS light comes on and the knocking stops. It is not clear which wheel is affected.

Solution: Replace the toothed ring, the reluctor ring, for the offending ring. A fault code found using Mitsubish software points to the ABS sensor, and this identifies the wheel. I did not need to replace the ABS sensor.

I think there is a service bulletin for this concern evolving replacing of rear wheel speed sensors due to rust causing excessive air gap between sensor and relucter causing bad signal to ABS module
