Bluetooth hands free unable to activate

Hoping someone has ran into this.

I have a 2008 Lancer ESId purchased a couple years back. It was prewired for Bluetooth, and checking the steering wheel controls, the stereo unit, and the glovebox, it appears everything is connected and ready (mic is connected in the front dome light, phone buttons on steering wheel light up and are connected to audio controls on steering wheel). The bluetooth module in the glovebox is also connected.

When first purchased, only the right side steering wheel controls worked (cruise control settings). Determined this was the clock spring that had gone bad, and recently replaced it. I have audio controls now! The phone buttons are lit up now, but they do not respond. On my MMCS stereo unit, the “Mobile Phone” button is grayed-out, and when pressing this it says “Unable to display due to system error”.

Has anyone ran into this issue before? I’ve disconnected the stereo unit to see if that works, but no dice.
