P0305

I just bought a 2006 Endeavor with this code, they said (at Autozone) it's a spark plug or coil, I'll be bringing it in to the mechanic on Thursday.

The people selling said it was good to fair condition, that's on me. There was low oil, added oil, the car runs rough, shakes, stutters, badly at around 35-40 mph, better before and after, but still rough and shaky.
that's basically all I have at this point.

I need to drive it about 30 minutes on the highway to get to my mechanic, but everything I read says I'll destroy the catalyst.

Engine light is on steady, not blinking.

Trying to get some info from those who may have had some experience with this.

Have it towed and save yourself replacing the O2 sensors and maybe the cat. ...J.D.
Well, when I got the car it had been sitting for a long time, and there was about 1/4 tank in it, I got some gas and there is a significant improvement😏
Yes, old fuel can be an issue. The code though, is telling you it is not burning the fuel completely. I would reset the code. I f it comes back you are going to have to replace your plugs or other ignition pieces. ...J.D.
Interesting..Autozone says it's P0305, but we brought it to the mechanic and the only code showing, don't know which one, is for one of the sensors, nothing else.

That is why I don't mess around with clowns like Auto Zone. Get your own code reader and learn how to use it, then you are sure what the problem is. Worth every penny. ...J.D.

That's the code reader that Autozone uses, my mechanic just recently got this big new fangled computer. So the mechanic changed the o2 sensor, car wasn't riding too bad. To be clear, the car has a strong vibration, and rides rough, every so often when I hit 35-40 the basically jumps, like I'm riding over boulders, but if I give it a little gas it goes away. So driving along, engine light goes on, and I knew it would, and all the symptoms I previously had are back. At this time had no choice but to go back to Autozone, P0431 is popping up.
The diagnostics are only as good as the man using the equipment. Enjoy...J.D.

Auto Zone people are not mechanics, plain and simple. They are there to sell you parts. All they know is "the code reader says [blank]". Most of them can barely read a parts computer program. I have that Bosch scanner, but I have years of professional experience to understand what it is telling me too. If a mechanic changed out the O2 sensor and it runs as badly as you indicate, he does not know what he is doing, no matter how fancy his equipment is. Take it to someone else. Yes, you WILL cause damage if you drive it very far that way. ...J.D.

BTW: The P0305 code is saying #5 cylinder is missfiring. That P0431 code indicates you already have an issue with the converter.
Just wanted to update. That P0305 has never shown up again, but the P0420 is what keeps showing up, my mistake, it was not P0431. I know the mechanic is not doing something right, because he had to replace bank 1 sensor 2 in two of my cars (2000 Windstar) and they are both still showing a code for this sensor, research on the Endeavor shows the P0420 leading back to this sensor.
The P0420 code also indicates a faulty converter. But this is CAUSED by something not working correctly in the engine. I would suspect your P0305 code is the key. #5 cylinder was misfiring and, the unburnt fuel plugged up the converter. I would MAKE SURE everything is good with all cylinders before replacing the converter. Also make sure ALL the O2 sensors are good before replacing the converter. ...J.D.

Mine 2011 had issues with the shutter almost like a misfire at 35-40 mph It was in tranny something with the torque converter I changed the fluid and filter and it fixed it and had the same code also and it ended up being the 3rd converter that is unmoniterd but it would through the code also o2 sensors
