Reverse camera not coming on

Hi All,

I have a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander that has been pretty great. A couple of days ago, I noticed my backup camera was not coming on when I went into reverse. Going into the settings, I saw that the camera worked. After a while, I figured out how to go into the service menu and looked at the "Vehicle Signal Check" menu. The Link system does not receive any "Shift Position R" signal (as per the attached image). The camera works, as I can go into the calibration settings. I'm pretty sure it is likely due to some switch in the gear shift console, but I wanted to check if anyone had this issue and resolved it.

The reverse lights come on, and obviously, every other indicator seems to identify that the car is indeed in reverse.

Please let me know, and thanks in advance.

Yes I did. But non of them unable to change. Thanks
The Reverse signal comes from the ETACS, so this may have a problem with it. But i still think it is more likely to be the head unit, as i have changed a few for this same fault. But you would need to visit a dealer or a specialist to get them to diagnose. If it is a faulty radio it is much cheaper to buy an aftermarket unit ( pioneer, alpine etc) as the original factory units are ridiculously expensive
Thanks for the support. I changed the head unit and now working fine. Thank you again.

Thanks for the feed back. its always good to hear what the outcome is. That is what helps other people.
Been searching as I've got the same issue of reversing camera no longer working in a 2013 Outlander. Worked fine, then suddenly gone.

Same head unit as Sharmain, and in the menus have:
  • Confirmed the camera itself is working
  • External Device Connection Result - Camera: OK
  • Vehicle Signal Check - Shift Position R: Off (even if vehicle running and in reverse)
What was interesting though was in the Versions Indication menu, it reports CAN Module as "Acquisition Error".

I've tried searching for that, with no success. Do people have any idea if that could be the issue for me?
I havent heard of that fault. But if you can see the camera in setup, and its getting the reverse signal then the ETACS may have a fault. But codes would need to be read to confirm

Thanks for the reply Dibby. Are those OBD codes? Is there a particular program for reading them? I have an ELM327 v2.1 OBD2 bluetooth module, not sure if that would be sufficient.
They are OBD2 codes. The ECU is called ETACS or Body computer. If you can see data on it then you could possibly see a parameter for rear camera. But i have never tried with an ELM327

Hi. Any luck with your camera?
Hi. Any luck with your camera?
Nope - I tried my OBD2 reader to try and self-diagnose a little further, but:
a) after sitting in the car glovebox for a couple of years, it now refuses to connect via bluetooth., and
b) even if it did still work, it seems the ELM327 are cr*p for this sort of thing anyway according to the interwebs

Haven't gotten around to going to an auto electrician or dealer. The Outlander is due for a service so will ask the mechanics about it when we take it in. They might at least be able to tell me what their OBD readers say...

So still reversing with no camera :(. The one time I really needed it (hitching up a trailer), I just used the service menu trick to activate the camera. That's fine when you've got time to muck about, but not practical for day to day driving.

BRK, i am having the same problem with the camera and also see the CAN module as Acquisition Error. Do you have any new information about this CAN module?
I purchased my 2022 Outlander SEL not even a month ago been in the shop 75% of ownership for this problem. They have rebooted system. Service sent videos to Japan engineers over a week ago and no replies yet to the service dept. They replaced the electronic shifter still not working. My vehicle seems not to work in the morning but works in the afternoon, weird. This is getting frustrating
It took me ages to find as I know nothing about fixing cars but I got mine working. The backup bulb sensor was disconnected. I just popped it back on and it worked.
Check the backup light sensor. Usually around the transmission

Hi there. is the backup light sensor under the car? or inside whrere the shifter and emergency break are located. thank you for your help.
I have a 2014 Outlander GT with just under 62,000 miles that just started with the same issue. I can get into the camera settings and see the camera still works, the back up sensors still beep when backing up and reverse lights work. I can't figure out how to get into the service menu and look at the "Vehicle Signal Check" menu. Do I need special equipment to check the "mmcs service menu confirms that its connected to the etacs via CAN communication?" As a 57 year old grandma, I need to know what to tell the technician when I take the car in to have the issue fixed. And I really don't want to look like a crazy female who knows nothing about cars (even tho I really am :giggle:) I'll admit I am spoiled to having the camera, but it has proven to be a great feature with young children and pets around! Has anyone figured out a definite fix for the issue? Thanks in advance for any help!!
I also have 2014 Outlander with reverse camera stopped working! Did you get it fixed?
I have a 2013 mitsubishi outlander, after 9 years of usage, my rear camera stopped working when rear gear is activated. But in camera settings mode it seems working. This is the first fault of the car, I'm using the car for nine years, and still in 90 thousand kilometers. I'm waiting for the solution. I'm from Izmir, Turkey and this car is very rare in my country.

Hi All,
I have the very same issue with my 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. All I did was disconnect the cable from the battery, wait for a few minutes and connect it back again, like a reboot on your phone. Well it worked back normal again, but only for two days and then went off. Try it if it works for you, but not sure what is the problem, as it seems everything is ok when you disconnect and connect the battery. Good luck.

Cheers,

Ok I had the same issue happening with my 2014 Outlander. I disconnected the battery left it for five minutes and reconnected. It works now. So might be a software issue that goes away on restart.
