This week I replaced the timing belt, power steering belt, alternator belt and the water pump, garage charged roughly 3.5 hrs labour and $280 parts. I've only been driving the car over the weekend and noticed that when about to change gear the engine seems noiser now then before the belt change. Is that normal due to new belt? I haven't noticed anything else so far...

sumthing is loose or they did not properly time the oil pump which drives a balance shaft on one side the engine and the opposing side balance shaft belt[/b]

Also over the weekend noticed more vibration at about 1k rpm when driving and gear change, at idle everything seems smooth...I'll drive it for a couple more days....

ive seen this before. My cousin did a timing belt on his 2001 and another guy on his 2002 and has same harsh vibration in RPM in which i told them they needed to recheck their timing marks on the oil pump drive and the balance shaft. If the balance shaft that is driven by the oil pump and the balance shaft that is driven by a second belt is not aligned it will cause engine vibration. This is the specific reson the oil pump has a timing mark , because it drives a balance shaft on that side of the engine , most people think its juss the oil pump drive and dont concern to properly time it , and onlee time the balance shaft that is driven by its own belt.

But on this engine the oil pump drive gear is also attached to the frunt balance shaft so its very important to time it also[/b]

thank you for the information, update
1- Not sure if it makes a difference but the belt is a NAPA belt
2- Also when accelerating from rest up to 60km/hr I hear a slight high pitch sound for a brief second.

Will go back to the garage....

Update: Vibration still there minor. Belts alternator or power steer have been making a noise. They have been replaced 3 times same thing. When car has been parked over nite on first start 5-10 secs. noise. I tighten the alternator belt myself last week noise still there. I don't have a belt tension measuring tool doing it mostly by feel. Any thoughts?
