Has anyone else suffered a Balance Shaft Failure?

Mitsubishi tells me there are no replacement parts in the UK, and it will take eight weeks to arrive by sea, presumably from Japan. They say it is not carried in the UK due to the lack of storage space!!!!!!!

How many other people are waiting like this?

The engine is a 2.2DI-d diesel.

UPDATE
I've just replaced the balance shaft link (£43 from Japan) thought I'd try this before anything else. I think I caught it in it's early stage of wear as all the gears either side of the shaft looked fine with no missing teeth and no noticeable wear to the housings. Up to now the engine sounds fine and have taken it for a short spin and all looks ok at the moment. I will update if anything untowards happens. Thanks to all that have put information and input concerning this problem, I wouldn't have been able to this without your advise etc.

I have an 2013 diesel Outlander just over 95k on board, got very noisy about a month ago, went to dealer who diagnosed very likely worn balancer shaft / coupling cube and quoted around £5,000 (parts & labour) which is likely more than what the car is worth. Luckily there is a company in the UK that is well aware of this workmanship fault (ZEDperformance) and they produce aftermarket balance shafts / coupling cubes. I’ve spent over £300 pounds on parts and just over £300 on labour - the car purrs like a kitten again - the sound difference is mind-blowing. My mechanic changed the oil cleaned the pan etc. - feel I got away cheap tbh
Wrote to Mitsubishi a very 'nice' complaint letter but of course they are not interested as the car has been out of warranty for some time

I kept the old parts for posterity :) you can see the missing teeth - found them all when he drained the oil

Since this is a past from February, you've obviously found what you were looking for by now. I went to my favorite Mitsubishi Parts site and searched for balance shafts and found over 1000 results. I'm in California and don't know if they ship to the UK or not. I'd imagine they do.

Hi this is common failure. Mitsubishi should re called all the cars with 4n 14 to fix this even after 5 years warranty because is just braking around 60 000 mile

It’s Shocking, I won’t be getting another Mitsubishi “it’s out of warranty all repairs are chargeable” is the stock response, we offer a kit, for a part we don’t expect to fail, really!!! , the parts were clearly substandard at the time of production should have gone with a cam belt, at least you expect them to last 70k.

the measure or an organisation is not its faults, no one can see into the future, but how it deals with them.

don’t buy Mitsubishi

The dealer i work for have done 6 in five years, and we work on average 40 cars per day... is that a lot?
Hi DibbyDibbyDJ. I’m in Aus. Just bought a 2013 outlander diesel. Had it 2 weeks and the noise has started. Told it’s the balance shaft also. Can you remember the repair cost on this? Or if you are at a Mitzy dealership, is there a bulletin. (I also work at a dealership, just not a Mitsubishi one anymore. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Regards Donna.

I have a 2018 Outlander 2,2 with 37k kms on it. Was at the petrol station topping up wiper fluids and a guy parked next to me came over and said the balance shaft is gone on it. Apparently its a known issues with the outlanders from 2018 and earlier. He is a Mitsubishi mechanic and said he can hear that its gone. Will be taking it into the garage and see what excuses they give! and if it will be done in warranty.

They probably don't want to confess there's a problem with the car as it's under warranty and would cost them money to correct, Mitsubishi are in denial that there is a problem otherwise they would have called them all back to replace the faulty parts.
No mechanic i know wouldn't come up to you out of the blue to let you know if they weren't sure of their stuff. Get an independent garage/mechanic to confirm the problem, then go back to the Mitsubishi garage and tell them you have had confirmation that the balance shaft is faulty and needs replacing before it damages the engine further. This is an INHERENT PROBLEM with this engine.

I was driving my 2013 Outlander over a speed bump a few years ago, bang and conked. Tried to start it, sounded like a bag of spanner’s. When I got it to the garage, I was told it might have been covered under warranty if it wasn’t commercial, but nothing for me. No assistance from Mitsubishi at all. Got It to a local garage, he removed the balance shaft altogether, drove fine after but never sounded right. Hope that helps.

A balance shaft is designed to rotate and vibrate in a way that reduces the vibration produced by an engine. Balance shafts are commonly used for engine refinement. Four cylinder engines use a tow shaft, which turns in opposite directions on either side of engine's crankshaft :unsure:🚗

Hi All,
Thought I would just put my 2 pennies In. I too have the balance shaft issue on my Mitsy outlander 2.3 2011. I'm thinking of removing the coupler but would prefer replacement parts but it's just not worth the money on such an old car.
I would encourage all members or non members to come forward and post so we can get a real idea of how extensive this problem is.
If we can get enough people to come forward it could help in us the fight to get mitsubishi to recall and get this problem sorted once and for all.
Kind regards Sausages.
